HUNTER 430 LEGEND, 1995.   $145,000.00

UP-GRADED,  ADDED-TO, RE-WIRED & RE-PLUMBED & RE-NEWED, RE-TANKED AND LITERALLY RE-OUTFITTED AS AN UP TO DATE CRUISING BOAT BETWEEN  2004 AND THE FALL OF 2006 WHEN WE STARTED HEADING SOUTH TO CRUISE.

We’ve spent two seasons sailing Mexico, but as the saying goes: “you write your plans in the sand at low tide”, so - - -  -  our change of plans is your chance to get a great boat that’s completely cruise ready with ALL the systems, back-up systems, spare parts & everything else (and more) that you might need at WAY LESS than buying another boat and getting her ready yourself.  But the BIG plus is that you don’t have to spend two years (or even two weeks) getting the boat ready, you can start sailing NOW!

ESPIRITU off the coast of the “Mexican Riviera” on a nice warm December day

She is roomy, light & airy, fast, comfortable, completely up-to-date, dry to sail, fun, and safe.  It is almost like living and sailing in a two-bedroom “condo”, with the huge master bed accessible from both sides so you don’t have to climb over each other getting in or out. She’s got forward & aft independent air conditioning, galley with a new ‘sealed-burner’ gas range/oven, and large heads with shower areas.  Swimming in the warm waters of Mexico is great, especially when there’s a full shower to rinse off the saltwater on the rear swim platform as you hop-out.

There isn’t another boat outfitted like this and in this condition
within THOUSANDS of dollars of this price.

Espiritu at Marina Mazatlan in January, 2008. With this stern it is sure easy coming & going weather you are using the dock or a dingy, and there is extra storage on the ‘back porch’.  The solar panels are efficient, and out of the way.

DETAILS AND SPECIFICATIONS

LAYOUT
She has two complete staterooms and two complete heads, each a shower. Master stateroom is aft with a center-line king bed. Second stateroom is forward on starboard, with its adjoining head. The Galley is mid ship on port opposite the huge setee. The nav station is on starboard and contains complete controls for all instruments, electronics and systems.

GALLEY
A double, stainless steel sink makes working in the galley easy, and back-up water systems (including a salt water wash that really stretches your fresh water capacity) insures you can stay out as long as you want. The sealed burner gas stove was new in ’05 and the microwave new in ’06. There is a huge chest freezer and a large over the counter refrigerator. This plan includes an island for storage and serving between the galley and the salon, and there are lots of cupboards & drawers for ample, easy to reach provisions.

SALON
The salon’s huge table makes for lots of fun gatherings from board games to formal dinners; we served a Thanksgiving dinner for six here a month into our journey.  For ‘sleep-overs’ or lots of crew it converts into an over-sized king bed. Plenty of windows and hatches make this a fun place to gather.

NAV STATION
The nav station is complete and well laid out. Located here is the stereo system, all the electric controls and read-outs as well as necessary storage space for the normal navigation charts & gear you’d use here.  NOTE: located here is a new ICOM IC-M504 with DSC, and its own dedicated Garmin 176C GPS. Also at the nav station is an ICOM IC-M710 SSB unit complete with a PACTOR modem/controller for Sailmail.

COCKPIT CONTROLS
All sheets, halyards and reefing lines are led to the cockpit for easy & safe handling. They are fed towards the winches through eight new SPINLOCK XTS rope clutches. There are SIX self-tailing winches mounted in the cockpit, including an electric Lewmar #48. A very robust BOOM-BRAKE / PREVENTER is mounted on the boom. Its control line is led back to the cockpit along the starboard side, as is the roller furling line for the jib.
The engine controls and readouts are mounted in front of the wheel, as are the radar and its hard-wired GPS. The read-outs for auto pilot, wind indicator, depth and speed gauges are mounted on the arch above and in front of the wheel.  The 5” RICHIE compass is pedestal mounted on the cockpit table, also in front of the wheel.  A “lev-o-gauge” inclinometer is also located here for easy reading. You will enjoy sitting in the cockpit on the Bottom siders.

ELECTRONICS & NAV EQUIPMENT
Naturally ESPIRITU has all the normal things like, an auto pilot, wind instruments, depth gauge etc. What is unique here is that the complete AUTOHELM package (ST7000) is augmented with a  FURUNO (1731) 24 mile radar with it’s own separate & dedicated NORTHSTAR GPS/ PLOTTER (951X) system, all located up in the cockpit where you use it, not down below. This boat has the safety of redundant GPS systems, one wired into the VHF radio for DSC, and the other wired into the radar system for side by side viewing and readout on the radar screen. As an additional safety feature, the Garmin 176C GPS can be independently operated on battery backup.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
The boat uses a standard 12v battery as its engine battery. The ‘house banks’ are two MASTERVOLT AGM – 225’s. They can be used independently as two banks, or together as one bank.  Electrical power is augmented with a NORTHERN LIGHTS diesel genset, which also provides 110v power and a Heart Freedom inverter / charger.  A third independent electrical system is provided by three KYOCERA – 130 TM solar panels. House battery conditions are monitored through a ZANTREX Link 20. A small back-up inverter is also stored on board for charging flashlight batteries should the need arise. The on-board lighting system has been upgraded to include LED lights in all areas of the boat: staterooms, heads, salon, nav station and courtesy lights. The ceiling mounted LED lights can also be switched to red lights to help your night vision on passages. There are two, 50 ft, 30 amp dock cords for shore power.
With separate redundant systems you are not only safe, you are assured of plenty of uninterrupted fun time on the water if you are out cruising or just out sailing for the weekend.

ENGINE / PROP
The engine is a Yanmar 4JH2E. It is in very good condition, has had professional care and maintenance, and has slightly over 2,200 hrs on it. It is matched with a bronze MAX PROP to provide excellent cruising speed & fuel consumption, with the great sailing of a high quality folding prop.

GROUND TACKLE
Three complete systems:
* 44 lb Bruce with 100 ft of chain & 200 ft three braid nylon rode.
* 55 lb stainless steel plow, 25 ft chain & 200 ft three braid nylon rode.
* Fortress FX-37, 25 ft chain and 300 ft three braid nylon rode.
We use the 44 lb Bruce as our primary anchor in Mexico, and have only used the 55 pounder as a kellet twice, in windy situations. The Fortress is light enough to use as a stern anchor when one is needed, even though it really is over-kill; It is easy to handle in the dingy. I really brought it along as another storm anchor.

SAFETY GEAR
ZODIAC six-person life-raft, Life-sling system, throwable devices, 406 mhg EPIRB,   4 – fire extinguishers ABC rated located throughout the boat, current flares, first-aid kits, boathook, horn/bell, boarding ladder, inflatable PFD’s with strobe lights, radar reflector, large hand-held searchlight, hand-held vhf radio, battery back-up hand-held gps (Garmin 176C currently hooked into ICOM M504) & Garmin handheld 45. The cockpit is surrounded by heavy-duty stainless steel grab bars, including the rear life-lines which have been replaced by stainless steel bars. These changes insure the safety of any crewmember entering or leaving the cockpit weather over the stern steps or the side walk-ways. Jack-lines are used from the bow to the cockpit along both sides of the boat.

DINGEY & OUTBOARD
The Achilles inflatable dingy and 8 hp Evenrude outboard are in good  condition. The dingy is complete with oars, and a dingy anchor & rode. There is an outboard motor storage board on the rear stainless steel rail. The strong set of dingy davits with a 6::1 ratio lifting system mounted on the stern makes it easy to raise the dingy, even with the motor left on. The starboard davit is used to lift the outboard motor from the dingy.

NEW AND UPGRADED SYSTEMS
Although ESPIRITU is a 1995 boat, her overall condition and systems can be compared to boats that much newer, and MUCH more expensive.  We’d up-graded her expecting to sail for several more years, eventually going through the Panama Canal and up the east coast.

This was Christmas in Bara De Navidad. Although our journey is a little shorter than we expected, it has been so much more than we could have guessed. ESPIRITU is ready to keep going, all she needs is new crew.

Please visit our blog at: www.sailblogs.com/member/espiritu and enjoy the pictures and information and comments. Then start planning your own cruise.

PHOTOS

The weather was great and very warm, so we had taken down the enclosures for the dodger & bimini, and also taken off the lee-cloths. This shot shows the extra stainless steel grab-bars& rails enclosing the cockpit, and the heavy duty dingy davits with a 6 to 1 purchase, for eeaassyy lifting.

The auto-pilot makes sailing, motoring and posing for shots real easy. At the start of our journey we had extra gear on deck for going through the Panama Canal. The load has been lightened a bit since those plans changed last year. We do have plenty of “Jerry-cans” for extra diesel and gas.

This is a good shot of the “sugar-scoop-stern”, pad for the outboard, rear drop down wind-screen, dual electrical hook-up and SSB antenna on the stern. The dingy davits had not yet been installed when this shot was taken before we left.

This is a shot adding the barrier coat when we raised the water-line and had the bottom job at KKMI, just before we headed south with the Ha Ha in 2006. With the wing-keel she only draws approx 5 ft.  Bottom & zincs are well maintained.

Its great having breakfast outside in the roomy cockpit, or celebrating a special occasion downstairs in the ‘formal’ dining room.

The galley has lots of space, storage & light & air, and has a NEW sealed-burned gas oven / range (like the one in your kitchen at home), microwave oven, double ss sink, ample drain-board space, island that backs up to the dinette.

In the lower photo is the HUGE CHEST FREEZER, with the refrigerator over the counter built into the cabinet.

The top photo is the Aft stateroom showing the oversized king bed on the center-line (great for getting in & out of), and some of the ample locker space.

The lower photo is of the aft head, including the clothes hamper and the separate shower stall.

These shots show the forward stateroom, its writing table, excellent lighting and fantastic storage.  Even the reading lights over the bed are now LED’s.

This is looking forward through the forward stateroom up to the forward head, showing the red LED night-time lights in the forward area of the boat.

The large forward head is shown in this photo taken from the doorway of the forward stateroom.

There is easy access to the dingy or the bar-b-q from the ‘back-porch’.

The nav station is complete with everything electrical at finger tip reach, from GPS, VHF, SSB, solar or genset controls, to monitoring the RACOR fuel system.

This is your view of instruments while standing at the helm. Everything from auto pilot, wind info, depth, and speed (these are overhead on the arch), to the compass, GPS, radar, radio mounted on the left, engine controls on the right, and engine information and read-outs, all on pedestal.  EVERYTHING IS VISABLE.

ESPIRITU is comfortable, capable, fully outfitted, and in the condition of boats of boats not half her age.  She would be great as a two bedroom condo anyplace you want to be; BUT she is fantastic as a comfortable cruising boat, with the added bonus of comfortable quarters for any guests who come to visit.

If you want to go sailing but don’t want to spend a lot of time and more money than you expect getting ready, here’s your boat ready to go for $145,000.00.

By the way, if you are moving up from the “right” trailerable sailboat
we might even take it in on “trade”.
